How to Art Journal Your Adventure

Are you keeping a paper journal and don’t know what to write at the end of each day?

Learn fun new ways to keep track of your adventures with nature doodling.

You don’t need to be an artist or have any drawing skills.

We will go over techniques to track your day with emojis and doodles.

I used these techniques on my PCT thru-hike and in my daily journal when I am just at home.

We will go over some fun creative ways to keep a journal with the focus being on trail and outside. This technique can be used for any journal keeping but the focus will be backpacking at this time.

Why nature doodling?

I kept a paper journal on my PCT hikes and had a hard time writing full sentences at the end of the day.

Over time I started using an emoji shorthand to describe my day.

I started following some rules of nature journaling combined with doodles to describe my day on trail.

I created a dynamic spread to look at in my journal and a more complete view of my days and weeks on trail.

What to expect:

We will discuss different formats and ways to track your days.

We will look at what you see, hear, smell or feel vs. writing a linear description of the day.

I would often get frustrated with my traditional journal when I forgot to add a detail about my day and had to work it in somehow.

With a nature doodle journal, there isn’t a linear day.

There is room to write a sentence here and there and draw more of your day.

I will show you my techniques and what has worked for me.

At the end, there will be a discussion and questions.

It is all about freedom of personal expression and having fun with your notes.

I hope that you will join me and learn something new that you can apply to your paper journal next time you are outside.

What to bring:

Please come with a paper and pencil or pen to take notes.
