Gear Preview: COROS HYDROP

A Castable Fishing Sensor That Brings Data to the Water

COROS has been steadily expanding its product offerings, and the new HYDROP is perhaps the brand's boldest move yet: a compact, castable fishing sensor designed to give anglers real-time data about what's happening beneath the surface.

COROS leaned into fishing with the NOMAD GPS watch (you can read my review of the NOMAD here). The NOMAD has six different fishing modes (shore, boat, surf, off/inshore, kayak, and fly). You can add environmental data fields such as tides, moon phases, temperatures, and forecasts to help improve your fishing performance. The watch enables you to log your catches, determine the optimal fishing times, mark your favorite locations, and alert you if you drift from your preferred fishing spot. These fishing modes are also available for the VERTIX 2/2S.

The HYDROP incorporates the watch’s environmental data with real time data on depth, temperature stratification, water color, and underwater brightness. Once retrieved, that information is displayed as visual charts and graphics directly on a compatible COROS watch (currently the NOMAD or VERTIX 2/2S) and synced with the COROS app.

The HYDROP is designed to work across a wide range of fishing environments, including shore, boat, kayak, and fly fishing in both fresh and saltwater. The sleek design reduces the risk of snagging.

It also tracks casting direction, throw distance, and water entry point. This information can be used to provide coverage mapping and a repeatable casting target.

The HYDROP is easy to use. You shake to wake the HYDROP up, then tie it to your line. It automatically syncs with your watch and is ready to use. When done, it automatically goes into hibernation and fits conveniently in your tackle box.

One feature I think is particularly smart is the Fishing Journal. Every cast with the HYDROP gets automatically logged in the COROS app's Explore Page, tagged with water conditions and location. Over time, this builds a historical record of what worked, where, and why. For folks who fish the same lakes or rivers seasonally, that kind of long-term data could be invaluable for identifying patterns.

At $89, the HYDROP is an accessible entry point for anglers curious about bringing more data into their fishing. This is a genuinely novel product from COROS, and it will be interesting to see how the fishing community responds. We will be providing a long-term review later this year.
