OUR VERDICT

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag is an exceptional blend of comfort, versatility, and sustainability. Crafted with high-quality materials, it provides optimum warmth for three-season adventures. Its innovative spoon-shaped design offers ample room for movement, ensuring a restful night's sleep for side sleepers without feeling constricted.

The Endless Promise utilizes 100% recycled fabrics, but what makes this bag exceptional is that it can be fully recycled at the end of its life. To make a recyclable sleeping bag, Nemo chose to use a polyester mono-material. Synthetic materials work well in damp environments and are ideal for vegans looking for a high-performing sleeping bag without the use of down.

I tested the Women's 35F Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag for this review. For years, I had used the original Forte for backpacking, paddle camping, and bikepacking trips, so I had an excellent comparison to the changes they made in the new Endless Promise design. I've used the Endless Promise bag for one complete backpacking season, allowing me to test it in all three seasons and varying climates.

KEY FEATURES

TEMPERATURE RATING AND SEASON SUITABILITY

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag is designed to offer comfort and versatility across a range of temperatures and seasons.

Individual comfort levels may vary, and factors such as clothing, sleeping pad insulation, and personal metabolism can affect the sleeping bag's performance in different temperatures. I’ve used this sleeping bag (35F) in spring, summer, and fall backpacking conditions in the Cascade mountains of Washington and the Badlands in South Dakota with minimal issues regulating temperature.

When backpacking in the Alpine Wilderness of the Cascades, temperatures reached close to 35F at night, so I added a sleeping bag liner to improve comfort. Overall, I found the temperature rating relatively accurate, but if you plan to frequently camp in shoulder seasons, the 20F sleeping bag may be a better option.

In warm weather, the temperature control options, like the thermal gills and the fabric type, made sleeping more bearable. While backpacking the Badlands in South Dakota, temperatures were up to 99F during the day, and it didn’t get much cooler than 70F at night. The materials and ventilation were essential in helping me regulate my temperature as I slept.

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag offers a balance of warmth, comfort, and versatility suitable for most three-season camping adventures. For extreme cold or winter camping in harsh conditions, you may need to consider a sleeping bag with a lower temperature rating or additional insulation. However, this sleeping bag is sufficient for most kinds of three-season backpacking.

INSULATION TYPE AND QUALITY

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag features synthetic insulation. Synthetic insulation is known for its durability, quick drying time, and hypoallergenic properties, making it a popular choice, especially in damp or humid conditions.

To make the sleeping bag recyclable, they had to use only one material type across the entire sleeping bag: polyester. They chose recycled polyester for the shell and lining material but did not disclose the insulation type. However, since the bag is fully recyclable, we can assume that it is also made of polyester.

After using the 35F Forte EP sleeping bag for an entire backpacking season, the insulation is comfortable and appears durable. I have experienced no cold spots forming. I store the sleeping bag out of the compression bag to prevent this from happening.

While specific details about the insulation properties and fill weight may vary between models and sizes within the Forte series, Nemo Equipment provides comprehensive specifications on its website and product literature, allowing consumers to make informed decisions based on their needs and preferences.

WEIGHT AND PACKED SIZE

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag offers a balance of lightweight design and compact packed size. Due to the synthetic insulation, the bag won’t be as compactible as a down sleeping bag like the Nemo Disco, but it packs down reasonably small for the temperature ratings.

The weight ranges from approximately 2 lbs 8 oz to 3 lbs 8 oz, depending on the model and size. The 20F bag weighs 3 lbs 13 oz, while the 35F bag weighs closer to 2 lbs 13 oz. It strikes a favorable balance between warmth and portability. I easily fit the bag into the bottom of my Osprey Volt 75L backpack using the provided compression sack (18.0 x 10.5 in dia), but I wish the pack size and weight were lower for longer-distance trips.

SHAPE AND DESIGN

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag is characterized by its innovative shape and thoughtful design features, like the spoon shape and thermo gills.

Spoon Shape

Its unique spoon shape design offers extra room in the shoulders and knees, allowing for more natural movement and enhanced comfort during sleep. As someone who sleeps on their side or stomach, the spoon design is a must-have, so I don’t feel constricted and can easily move around while I sleep. It has a roomy foot box that accommodates various foot sizes and provides ample space for comfortable movement.

Thermo Gills

Nemo Equipment integrated the Thermo gills into the Forte EP, which are also seen in their original Forte design and a few of their other sleeping bag models. The Thermo gills help promote temperature regulation. The zippered vents are located along the torso, allowing users to regulate temperature without compromising insulation. An update from their original Forte design is that they added gills on the inside and outside of the bag for even better control.

Other Features

Additional features include an integrated pillow pocket and an oversized draft collar. The integrated pillow pocket provides added convenience, allowing users to stuff extra clothing or use a Nemo pillow for personalized comfort.

The draft collar is another update from the original Forte design. Both models have a draft collar, but the EP model is almost twice the size. I prefer the larger draft collar as opposed to a traditional mummy cinch around my face. If you’re like me and move a lot in your sleep or don’t like feeling constricted, the draft collar is an excellent option.

COMFORT AND SLEEPING EXPERIENCE

ERGONOMICS AND DESIGN FOR COMFORT

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag incorporates several comfort features to enhance the sleeping experience.

Integrated Pillow Pocket

An integrated pocket allows users to insert extra clothing or a pillow for added comfort and personalized support while sleeping.

I use the Nemo Fillo backpacking pillow, which fits perfectly in the slot. I no longer lose my pillow or have it slide off the back of my sleeping pad in the middle of the night.

Soft Fabric Lining

The sleeping bag's interior fabric lining is soft and comfortable against the skin, enhancing overall comfort throughout the night.

What I love about the soft feel of the fabric is that I can sleep in my underwear and not feel sticky or uncomfortable sensory-wise.

ROOMINESS AND SPACIOUSNESS

I recommend this sleeping bag to all of my side-sleeping friends, and especially to women. If you shift often or sleep on your stomach with one leg up, normal mummy bags often feel too restricting. The spoon-shaped design gives you extra room to move without feeling restricted.

Spoon Shape Design

The innovative spoon shape provides extra room in the elbows and knees, allowing for natural movement and reducing feelings of constriction during sleep. What I love about the spoon shape design is that, as an active sleeper, I can toss and turn in the night without feeling restricted. I can comfortably sleep on my side and even bring one or both of my knees up without issue.

When camping with my oldest dog (GSP mix), he can actually fit inside the sleeping bag with me.

Roomy Foot Box

A spacious foot box accommodates various foot sizes and allows for comfortable foot movement.

What I love about the wider foot box feature is the freedom of movement it provides my feet and legs. Plus, if I am drying socks or clothes inside my sleeping bag, there’s extra room for them.

SLEEP QUALITY AND THERMAL PERFORMANCE

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag excels in thermal performance, providing reliable warmth and comfort for varying conditions.

The temperature rating varies depending on the specific model and size. Generally, the Forte series sleeping bags are designed for three-season use, suitable for spring, summer, and fall camping trips.

The temperature rating typically ranges from 15°F to 35°F (-9°C to 2°C). Note that individual comfort levels can vary. For me, the 35F bag is perfect for summer and early fall camping trips, but I find myself having to add a sleeping bag liner depending on the temperatures.

Several design features improve thermal performance:

Thermo Gills

Zippered vents strategically placed along the torso allow users to regulate temperature easily and provide customizable ventilation for different sleeping conditions.

The Thermo gills on this sleeping bag are easily accessible from inside and outside of the bag if you need more temperature control. I’ve had nights where I fall asleep too warm, so I open the gills all the way, and part way through the night, I start to cool down and need to close them. They’re easy to find without putting on my glasses or headlamp, which is great, especially when camping with a partner.

Draft Collar and Hood

The sleeping bag is equipped with a draft collar and hood to seal in warmth and prevent cold air from entering, ensuring a cozy sleeping environment.

A hood is customary for camping sleeping bags, but the draft collar is a game changer. The draft collar doesn’t feel as constricting as cinching the collar of a mummy bag hood. It leaves more room inside the bag's hood to move around, and I find it easier to manage my temperature naturally through the night.

Blanket Fold

The blanket fold at the top of the sleeping bag mimics the comfort of bedding at home, providing extra warmth and comfort around the neck and shoulders.

I don’t notice the blanket fold all that much while I am sleeping, but I appreciate the intention behind the design and that it helps keep my shoulder warm while I sleep.

Since the spoon shape design offers more wiggle room, the bag allows users to curl up and shift in their sleep with minimal heat loss. With strategically placed synthetic insulation, this sleeping bag effectively retains heat and regulates body temperature.

DURABILITY AND BUILD QUALITY

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag is designed with durability and build quality in mind. It incorporates several features to ensure long-lasting performance in rugged outdoor environments.

MATERIALS USED IN CONSTRUCTION

This bag's high-quality materials provide durability, comfort, and performance. To make it 100% recyclable, Nemo had to make all of the fabric aspects from one material: polyester.

Ripstop Fabric

Some models of the Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag may incorporate ripstop fabric in critical areas, enhancing durability and preventing tears or punctures.

Strong Shell Fabric

The sleeping bag is constructed with high-quality shell fabric that is durable and abrasion-resistant.

Water-Resistant Treatment

The sleeping bag's shell fabric may be treated with a water-resistant coating or DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish, providing protection against moisture and enhancing durability in damp or wet conditions.

Quality Insulation

High-quality synthetic insulation maintains its loft and warmth over time, ensuring reliable performance even with repeated use. For best results, store the sleeping bag with the provided Nemo storage bag.

DURABILITY OF ZIPPERS, SEAMS, AND STITCHING

The primary seams and zippers all have lasted me through one backpacking season. I keep my sleeping bag clean and zippers free of dirt to improve performance. The only zippers I’ve struggled with are those for the Thermo gills. These are smaller and much lower performing than the side opening zipper.

Reinforced Stitching

Durable stitching reinforces seams and stress points, enhancing the sleeping bag's overall strength and durability.

YKK Zippers

The sleeping bag features high-quality YKK zippers that are durable and smooth-operating, minimizing the risk of snags or jams and ensuring long-term usability.

LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE AND WEAR-AND-TEAR RESISTANCE

After using this bag for an entire backpacking and camping season, I haven’t noticed many durability issues. However, the zippers used for the Thermo gills have a tendency to snag the fabric and get stuck. Beyond that, the rest of the bag's features seem durable and long-lasting.

Nemo offers a lifetime warranty, and the Endless Promise collection is made from fully recyclable materials.

EASE OF USE AND PORTABILITY

HOW EASY IS IT TO PACK AND UNPACK?

Although this sleeping bag is made with synthetic insulation, it is reasonably compressible. It is not as compressible as the Nemo Disco, which utilizes down insulation, but I’ve never had an issue compressing and packing this bag when using the provided stuff sack. It fits nicely in the base pocket of my backpacking pack and can be pulled out or stuffed back with no issue.

COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER SLEEPING PADS

This sleeping bag's spoon shape makes it a bit wider than mummy bag options. After testing it with a variety of sleeping pad options, including the Thermarest Z-Lite, Nemo Tensor, Nemo Flyer, and the Sea to Summit Ether Lite XT, I found it suitable for almost any variety. Matching sleeping bags and pads with the length and size of the sleeping bag is ideal, but if you already have a sleeping pad, this bag will likely be compatible with it.

WEIGHT AND BULKINESS FOR BACKPACKING

The main downside of synthetic insulation is that it is heavier and bulkier for down insulation. I find that the tradeoffs are worth it with this bag, and since it does compress down well, I’ve never struggled to fit it into my backpacking gear lineup.

The compressed volume of the 35F long bag is 6.2 L. Women with a more petite build or frame or ultralight backpackers may want to invest in something lighter and more compressible. For my needs, the weight and bulky nature of the bag do not bother me.

PERFORMANCE IN VARIOUS CONDITIONS

WARMTH IN COLD WEATHER

Since these bags are rated for 20F or 35F, they’re not necessarily designed for extreme cold or winter camping conditions. The 20F Forte can be used close to 20F, which I have done with a sleeping bag liner that increased the temperature rating by about 10 degrees.

The insulating and heat-retaining properties of this bag are good, but if you run cold, you may want to consider investing in a liner to partner with the bag. Overall, this bag can be used in colder weather conditions, but it should be done so with caution and consideration.

VENTILATION IN WARM WEATHER

This bag is excellent for summer and warm-weather camping. The Thermo gills and open hood design allow for better thermo comfort control than many other bag designs I’ve tried. The zippers are easy to access and adjust even at night, allowing users to change the ventilation needed quickly.

The bag's materials are not too sticky in the summer and are comfortable against your skin if you’re wearing fewer layers.

MOISTURE RESISTANCE AND WATER-REPELLENT FEATURES

Nemo chose to use a C0 DWR chemistry to improve the water-resistance of this bag. By 2025, most brands in the outdoor industry should have transitioned all of their water repellency to C0 chemistry, which means it is free from harmful chemicals like PFAS (per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances.) While PFAS is an effective waterproofing agent, it is proven to cause serious health effects and environmental damage. Brands like Nemo Equipment began phasing out PFAS chemicals several years ago to ensure their products align with sustainability claims.

Still, since it is made from 100% synthetic materials, its water repellency is higher than that of a bag that uses down insulation. When it gets wet, it can continue to insulate and dry fairly quickly.

I have spilled tea on this sleeping bag, and while the outer lining did get wet, the inner materials and insulation were not impacted. With proper care and continued waterproofing with a product like Nikwax, moisture resistance will continue to perform well with this bag.

PERFORMANCE IN HIGH-ALTITUDE AND EXTREME CONDITIONS

I have not used this bag in extreme weather conditions and it doesn’t appear to be designed for use in especially high altitude or cold weather conditions.

SUSTAINABILITY AND ETHICAL COMPANY

Sustainability

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag embodies sustainability through its innovative design and eco-friendly materials. It is repairable, resellable, and the first 100% recyclable sleeping bag on the market.

Constructed with 100% recycled fabrics and insulation, it reduces environmental impact while maintaining high performance, and its recyclable design closes the loop. To make this possible, Nemo had to use a mono-material design to ensure all of the bag fabric could actually be recycled at the end of life.

The bag's design and use of synthetic materials focus on durability, ensuring longevity, and reducing waste through fewer replacements. Nemo offers a lifetime warranty for all of their products and is responsive to customer requests for repairs.

Social Impacts

Nemo's commitment to ethical manufacturing and environmental stewardship sets a positive example for the industry, influencing other companies to prioritize sustainability in their products. The popularity of the Endless Promise sleeping bag contributes to a culture of environmental awareness and activism among outdoor enthusiasts, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for preserving natural landscapes.

Corporate Responsibility Brand-Wide

Nemo's commitment to sustainability extends beyond product design. They engage in responsible manufacturing practices and advocate for environmental stewardship within the outdoor industry. The Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag demonstrates how sustainability and performance coexist harmoniously in outdoor gear, setting a new standard for eco-friendly camping equipment.

The company emphasizes environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and product integrity. Nemo is committed to minimizing its environmental footprint by incorporating recycled materials into its products, reducing waste through durable designs, and prioritizing eco-friendly manufacturing processes. By promoting transparency in its supply chain and adhering to fair labor practices, Nemo ensures that its products are produced ethically and with respect for workers' rights.

NEMO FORTE 20 VS 35

Available in 20-degree and 35-degree options, both bags offer similar features and are suitable for different temperature ranges.

Temperature Rating

The 20-degree sleeping bag is designed for colder conditions, providing warmth and insulation in temperatures as low as 20°F (-6.7°C).

The 35-degree sleeping bag is suitable for milder conditions, offering comfort around 35°F (1.7°C) and above.

Insulation

Both bags feature synthetic insulation, which provides warmth and compressibility. However, the 20-degree bag has more insulation to accommodate colder temperatures than the 35-degree bag.

Weight and Packability

Due to its additional insulation, the 20-degree sleeping bag may be slightly heavier and less compressible than the 35-degree bag. Because of this, the 35-degree sleeping bag is better for backpacking and lightweight travel.

Both bag options are available in a long or regular design, as well as men's and women’s options. The colors differ for each bag rating and gender designation. Since the 20F and long bag versions require more insulation or material, the price is higher than the 35F regular bag.

SHOULD I BUY THE NEMO FORTE SLEEPING BAG?

The Nemo Forte Endless Promise sleeping bag is a long-term investment. Although the price may put many folks off, in my experience, Nemo equipment is durable and long-lasting. They have a killer warranty policy and are willing to repair products as needed.

Available in either a 20F or 35F temperature rating, this bag is most suited for three-season camping and backpacking. It’s ideal for anyone who is vegan and wants to avoid animal-based products like down in their sleeping bags. The bag's recyclable nature makes it better suited to environmentally focused consumers.

The spoon-shaped sleeping bag is a game changer for anyone who sleeps on their side or stomach or moves a lot in their sleep. I have a hard time returning to mummy bags after using the spoon-shaped sleeping bags because I find them far more comfortable, allowing me to get a better night’s sleep in the backcountry.
