That’s why we created this guide to the best gifts for skiers, based on years of real-world testing and thousands of hours spent on snow.

From weatherproof jackets and cozy midlayers to practical tools and slope-ready gadgets, these are the gifts we know skiers actually use and appreciate season after season.

We've chosen our gifts for skiers based on their appeal to skiers of all levels and living in all geographic locations.

Whether your recipient is a lifelong powder hound, a backcountry explorer, or a beginner gearing up for their first season, you’ll find ideas to match their style, skill level, and budget. And while we chose these gifts with skiers and snowboarders in mind, many of them are just as useful for snowshoers, winter hikers, or anyone who loves spending time outside when the snow flies.

What to consider before buying a gift

Before you dive into our recommendations, it’s worth taking a minute to think about who you’re shopping for. A little preparation goes a long way toward picking a gift they’ll love — and actually use. Keep these key factors in mind:

  • Budget: Set a spending range before you start browsing. We’ve organized this guide by price to help you easily find ideas that fit. We also note when spending a little more can get you a lot more in quality of item. If you have some flexibility in your budget, keep an eye out for those recommendations.

  • Skill level: Consider their experience on snow. A new skier might benefit from versatile, beginner-friendly or extra-durable gear, while an expert could appreciate more technical or specialized equipment.

  • Personal style: If you’re shopping for apparel, think about their taste — from colors and fit preferences to whether they lean minimalist or bold. Ski style changes from year-to-year. Some skiers have loyalty to certain ski brands, so it may be worth looking at photos and trying to get a sense of which brands your skier uses.

  • Safety and comfort: Gear like helmets, avalanche tools, or insulated layers offer peace of mind and can make their time on the mountain safer and more enjoyable.

  • Brand and quality: Durable, well-made products perform better, last longer, and are more likely to become gear they reach for again and again.

How we selected the gifts

Every gift in this guide meets one or more of three criteria:

  1. We’ve tested it ourselves in snowy, real-world conditions

  2. It repeatedly ranks highly across our long-term gear reviews and accessory roundups (like our Guide to the Best Ski Accessories).

  3. It is something we'd want to give as a gift (or receive ourselves).

We didn’t just pick “cool-looking” stuff — we picked items that survive cold, abrasion, and repeated use and meet the performance requirements we set like breathability and waterproofness.

As a gear review website that promotes buying less stuff, we also think these are practical gifts aimed at helping skiers find more joy on the slopes.

As mentioned in our criteria, many of these gifts are ones we’ve either gifted ourselves, received, or kept on our own quivers.

This collection spans modest, budget-conscious picks all the way to premium upgrades — so you can confidently find something the skier in your life will actually use, enjoy, and remember.

Gifts $400 and up

Whether someone is a seasoned winter sports fanatic or looking to get into skiing for the first time, these are some of our favorite essential gear items sure to make anyone who hits the slopes happy. Unlike ski boots or ski jackets, where fit and style are comfort, the items on this list are more universal and less fit-sensitive, yet are great items for any skier to receive.

WHY IT'S GREAT FOR SKIING:

  • High-coverage design protects from both sun and UV reflection on the snow surface, as well as from wind and blowing snow.

  • Chromapop lenses offer great optics and visibility. For extra versatility, the photochromic lens option is a great choice.

  • The arms on the Wildcat sunglasses are soft while still holding their shape. This makes them extremely comfortable for all day use, especially when worn under a helmet.

  • Because these sunnies offer such great coverage, you can wear them on the uphill and the down so you don't have to hassle with goggles at your transition or bother carrying them in your pack.

WORTH THE INVESTMENT?

There’s no denying that these sunglasses have a premium price tag. But we truly believe they’re a premium product and worth the extra money compared to similar models.

"We like the lens quality and style of these sunglasses a lot, but the main reason we believe they’re worth it is because of their unmatched comfort. Plus, it helps that after ski season is over they’ll likely turn into their favorite pair of biking sunglasses while they wait for the snow to fly again." - Stasia Stockwell, contributing writer

A safe drive home: Michelin X-Ice Snow Tires

  • Price: $182

  • Best for: Winter hikers who drive to trailheads on snowy or icy roads

  • Ideal conditions: Snow, slush, ice, wet winter roads, freezing temperatures

  • Key highlights: Superior traction and braking in cold conditions, flexible rubber compound, aggressive tread with ice-biting sipes, install-once seasonal design

For skiers who drive to resorts, backcountry destinations, or anywhere in between in the snow, the journey often starts long before the trailhead — and winter roads can be the most dangerous part of the trip.

For more options, see our Backcountry Road Travel: Recovery and Emergency Kit List.

Michelin X-Ice Snow 205/55R16 94H XL

A set of Michelin X-Ice Snow Tires is a game-changing gift that transforms how safely and confidently they travel in cold weather. These tires feature deep, aggressive tread patterns, siping that grips ice, and a cold-weather rubber compound that stays flexible in sub-zero conditions — providing reliable traction on snow, slush, and frozen pavement.

Unlike chains or cables, these tires stay on all winter long, so there’s no crawling in the snow to install them when conditions turn. That means hikers can focus on their adventure instead of worrying about how to get there.

View at Amazon

Why it’s great:

  • Provides unmatched grip for driving to remote trailheads safely

  • Eliminates the hassle of installing chains in freezing weather

  • Performs across all winter road conditions — not just snow

  • A thoughtful, high-impact gift that supports year-round adventure

“I didn't realize how much of a difference snow tires would make until I actually used them. Winter tire's rubber compound is different. Winter tires are made with a rubber that keeps flexibility in cold temperatures, whereas all-season tires are made to withstand heat on the road. If the tire stiffens up in cold weather, it won't provide as much traction.

Winter tires aren't just good for snow. They're excellent for all winter conditions – cold, wet, slush, snow, and ice.” - Naomi Hudetz, co-founder

Subscription To Independent Print Mags

Independent Print Magazines: Mountain Gazette and Ski Journal.

Independent Print Magazines: Mountain Gazette and Ski Journal.

Outdoor media has seen some significant changes in recent years. We skiers have seen some beloved titles disappear, but the good news is that independent ski media is alive and well, and print is far from dead. For the skier in your life who loves a good read, a subscription to one of these mags makes the perfect gift.

This is not your average zine. When I first got this beautiful, biannual behemoth in the mail, I had to scour my living room and office for a logical place to keep it. I mean this in a good way. The 11x17” size of Mountain Gazette stands out.

Photos look spectacular printed in this large format, and when your face is buried behind the XL pages, you feel fully immersed in the stories. There is no fluff to be found here; long reads combine thoughtful reporting, beautiful writing, and captivating photography. While skiing is at its core, it's also worth noting that this mag covers a little bit of everything for the adventurous soul.

This one is for the die-hards. Cover-to-cover, The Ski Journal’s pages are saturated with stories and photos from every corner of the industry. Throughout four issues each year, you’ll find unique destination reads and insightful profiles and flip through pages of stunning photography that’ll make you want to get out the door in search of powder stashes, big lines, and urban features.

The Ski Journal also has a sister title, The Snowboarder’s Journal, for the one-plankers out there.
