Our verdict
The BRANWYN Essential Bralette is a minimal bra providing low-impact support and all-day comfort. It features adjustable, convertible straps and a cut that works well for muscular bodies, such as climbers, gymnasts, or swimmers, who may have trouble finding bras that don’t dig.
I tested this over five years and thousands of miles of hiking and backpacking as well as paddling, biking, and everyday wear. I typically wear a size 34B and wear the size medium in the Essential Bralette, making it true to size according to the sizing guide. BRANWYN also offers an amazing First Try Guarantee: first-time customers can wash and wear one bra or underwear product and, if it doesn’t fit or work for them, return it within 14 days for a full refund!
The soft, lightweight, responsible merino wool fabric is very fast drying, doesn’t get smelly even over multiple days of wear, and is legitimately comfortable enough to wear all day and even sleep in. While this bra does not provide the level of support needed for high-impact activities like running, the BRANWYN Essential bralette is the best choice for hiking and backpacking for those who don’t want or need a lot of support.

How we tested
I have tested this bra extensively while hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, climbing, cycling, and packrafting. Because I love it so much, it’s become my number one choice bra, wearing it daily for over five years now! I have worn it for thru-hikes, such as the 900-mile Idaho Centennial Trail, countless peakbagging trips in the Cascades, and paddling the Grande Ronde River.
I typically wear I size 34B or a medium in bras. I have an athletic body with significant upper body muscle, which can sometimes be challenging to fit. My measurements put me in a size M according to the BRANWYN size chart and this is a great fit for me.
It was also my pick in our Best Sports Bras for Hiking guide.
Performance in the field
Support and bounce control
This bra excels at low-impact activities where minimal support is needed. It stays in place and doesn’t require fiddling. I never have to think about it! I do like to cross the straps for extra security if I’m going for a dip in a lake, but otherwise even worn straight, the straps do not slip off the shoulders.
Comfort over extended wear
Comfort is the best thing about this bra. I am very sensitive to scratchy fabrics, and even when brand-new, the merino is soft against my skin with no itchiness. It is so comfortable to wear all day for days on end. I wore a single BRANWYN Essential Bralette for my 900-mile Idaho Centennial Trail hike, much of which was in 90°F+ heat, and often going 1-2 weeks between laundry. The breathable merino doesn’t feel sticky on the skin, and the seamless construction eliminates digging and chafing. It is truly easy to forget you’re even wearing this bra.
Even on a thru-hike where I can’t do laundry often, the bra stays comfortable against the skin and maintains its shape and support for multiple days.
Moisture wicking and breathability
The single layer of merino blend fabric breathes and dries quickly, making it great for managing sweat. There is no bulky padding or extra layers to soak up sweat and stay wet. Drying out quickly is especially important when you’re wearing the bra for extended trips. It keeps the funk down, is more comfortable on the skin, and keeps you from getting chilled when you stop moving and the temps go down.
Note: While I love that this bra is a thin, single layer of fabric with no padding, if you are concerned about other people knowing you have nipples, this may not be the bra for you.
Fit accuracy
I typically wear a size 34B, which BRANWYN’s size chart indicates is a medium in the Essential Bralette. I found the medium to be the appropriate size for me and did not need to exchange sizes.
However, BRANWYN offers an amazing guarantee for first-time customers: you can actually wash and wear one bra or underwear piece and truly get to experience it, and if it doesn’t fit or you just don’t like it, you can return it for a full refund! Unwashed/unworn items can always be returned within 30 days.
The sides are fairly low cut under the arms and do not dig into my lats, a common fit issue I have with some bras. I love the freedom of movement this allows for activities like paddling and climbing.
Odor resistance
I regularly wear the Essential Bralette for multiple days on end, including backpacking trips in very hot and sweaty conditions. Unlike some synthetics I’ve worn that develop a hard to remove funk, BRANWYN’s merino is a miracle fabric: I have never noticed a smell!
Ease of use
Although it is a pullover style, because it lacks a stiff structure, it’s still easy to get in and out of.
The sliders for adjusting strap length are on the backside, which may require removing the bra unless you’ve got great shoulder mobility and can reach the sliders while wearing. However, the sliders stay in place, so once you’ve got your fit dialed in, you don’t need to touch them again.
The straps can be converted to a cross-back style, which is nice for wearing under tanks, or for a more secure fit for activities like swimming.
Durability
I typically rotate about four bras at a time, and each BRANWYN Essential Bralette I’ve owned has lasted about three years before the elastic is stretched out enough to warrant replacing. Around this time, the fabric also starts to wear thin on the back where a backpack rubs. I have never had any issues with the stitching of the binding/straps coming loose or fraying. I typically machine wash my bras in lingerie bags and then line dry.
Features
Adjustable straps
Sliders allow strap length to be adjusted for a custom fit.
Convertible straps
Hooks on the back allow the straps to be worn straight or crossed.
Seamless construction
The seamless construction makes for a smooth feel against the skin with no chafing points.
Single-layer fabric
The single-layer fabric allows the bra to breathe and dry quickly.
Sustainability
BRANWYN uses renewable merino wool that is Responsible Wool Standard certified. They also use EcoCart, which helps offset carbon emissions, their merino is certified to the ZQ+ Grower Standard, and they are REACH compliant. BRANWYN Essential Bralette vs. BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra
MSRP: $76
Materials: 81% merino wool, 14% nylon, 5% elastane (spandex)
Available sizes: XS-XXL
The BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra features the same great merino fabric as the BRANWYN Essential Bralette, but is double layered and has pockets for pads. It also features gathering which provides some separation, a high coverage cut, and wider straps. If you need padding or want the added shaping and don’t mind slightly longer drying times, choose the Essential Supreme. Learn more in our in-depth review of the BRANWYN Essential Supreme sports bra.
BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra
BRANWYN Essential Bralette vs. Title Nine Wanna Sweat Racerback
MSRP: $55
Materials: 92% nylon, 8% spandex
Available sizes: S-XL
The Title Nine Wanna Sweat Racerback offers slightly higher support, optional padding, and more coverage. The gathering in the front provides a bit of shaping and separation. Like the BRANWYN Essential Bralette, the adjustable straps allow for a customized fit, though they are not convertible from the racerback style. The synthetic fabric has a nice next-to-skin feel, but doesn’t offer the antimicrobial benefits of merino. The cut may be problematic for more muscular bodies with digging around the underarms.
I tested it in depth in our favorite Title Nine sports bras roundup.
Title Nine Wanna Sweat Racerback
BRANWYN Essential Bralette vs. Paradis Sport Merino Racerback Bra
MSRP: $79
Materials: 58% merino wool, 19% nylon, 17% recycled nylon, 6% spandex
Available sizes: S-XL
The Paradis Sport Merino Racerback Bra uses a double layer of thicker merino blend fabric, which makes it feel soft and plush but also warmer and less quick to dry than the BRANWYN Essential Bralette. While still intended for lower-impact activities, the Paradis Merino Racerback does provide more support than the BRANWYN Essential Bralette, and it has pockets for pads (not included) if that’s preferred. The wider, racerback straps are not adjustable and the cut is more full coverage, so it may not work for as many body shapes and sizes.

Why you should trust us / About the author
Sports bras were one of the first things I tested as a professional gear tester starting in 2017! I’ve tested many types of sports bras for activities ranging from high-impact running and HIIT workouts in the gym to low-impact, months-long hikes in the mountains. I have an athletic build with significant upper body muscle, which can be challenging to fit as bras often dig into my large lats through the underarm area. I am typically a size 34B or medium in bras (underbust: 31”, full bust: 36”, upper bust: 38”).
The Essential Bralette was extensively tested for over 5 years through a variety of activities: thousands of miles of hiking including backpacking the 900-mile Idaho Centennial Trail, snowshoeing and mountaineering, as well as paddling, cycling, climbing, and recreational swimming.
