BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra Review: A Merino Sports Bra With Breathing Room

Center ruching ends the uniboob, merino keeps the funk away, and it's comfy enough to forget you're wearing it.

Our verdict

BRANWYN’s Essential Supreme Bra, an evolution of their merino wool Essential Busty Bra, provides a solution for the dreaded “uniboob”—that is, the amorphous shape created when breast tissue is smooshed down while wearing a compressive, cup-less bra.

As my own, now-independent boobs can attest, BRANWYN succeeded in this quest by adding center ruching to create separation, along with sleeves for removable pads (which must be purchased separately) that provide additional definition.

As someone who fluctuates between a 36C and D cup, usually on the lower end, I’ve been wearing the BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra in size medium since late spring 2026. I’ve worn it on day hikes and walks, backpacking trips, multi-day travels, at the gym, and around the house.

Thanks to its soft feel, odor resistance, contoured shape, lightweight support, and overall versatility, it’s become the bra I reach for most often. It’s kept me comfortable in a variety of situations, including lifting weights, physical therapy, and backpacking in the mountains, and it fits well under a variety of clothing, including dressier options.

That said, the Essential Supreme Bra doesn’t provide enough support for higher-impact activities (although I have done a few very short, very light jogs while wearing it), and its sizing isn't as inclusive as it could be for those with larger busts. But it is a great all-around option for people who want a comfortable, everyday sports bra with light support that also gives your boobs a little bit of breathing room.

Best for

The author wearing the black BRANWYN Essential Supreme bra and wearing black pants with rocks and trees in the background.

The author was comfortable in the Essential Supreme on hikes, backpacking trips, at the gym, and as a daily wear bra.

  • Daily activities/casual wear, multi-day travel, and low-impact activities such as hiking, yoga, walking, backpacking, climbing, cycling, paddlesports, and light gym sessions.

  • Cup sizes A to G, with band sizes ranging from 28” to 44” (while this covers a lot of body types, it does exclude those with much bigger busts)

What we liked

A closeup of the center ruching of the BRANWYN Essential Supreme bra.

The center ruching is knit into the bra fabric and creates separation and definition.

  • Center ruching provides cup separation, which gives breathability and a more defined silhouette than cupless sports bras

  • Optional pads provide additional definition and modesty

  • The straps are convertible and lie flat beneath backpack straps

  • The use of merino wool is great for comfort, odor resistance, and regulation of heat and moisture

What could be better

A closeup of a metal hook on the BRANWYN Essential Supreme bra.
  • As with most sports bras, the removable pads can migrate in the pocket and feel a bit thin overall

  • Fabric can get stuck in the hooks at the end of each strap if not hand-washed

  • Sizing could be more inclusive

How we tested

The author wearing the black BRANWYN Essential Supreme bra with her arms outstretched. Hills are in the background.

The Essential Supreme is made mostly of merino wool and is quick-drying; the author sweated profusely on this day, and the bra dried quickly in the sun.

As someone who fluctuates between a 36C and D cup, I chose the medium size, which provided just the right amount of support — not too tight and not too loose. The version I tested was the original model, which came with circular cup pads; in the newer model, the pads are an optional, separate purchase and are more triangular, creating a less obtrusive silhouette under the bra material.

I spent four months testing the BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra in a variety of settings: as a daily driver at home and around town, during out-of-town travels where I wanted a jill-of-all-trades bra that could work as well during a morning hike as it could during an evening out, and for light-impact activities that included walking, hiking, backpacking, yoga, gym sessions (weightlifting, step machine, cycling), and physical therapy/mobility work.

Weather conditions for testing ranged from a few nights with lows hovering around freezing (at high camps in the Sierra) to daytime temperatures climbing into the low triple digits.

Fellow Treeliners Liz Thomas and Stasia Stockwell also provided feedback on their experiences wearing the Essential Supreme Bra in similar, low-impact settings. We tested this bra alongside others in our Best Sports Bras for AA-D Cups, Best Sports Bras for D+ Cups, and Best Sports Bras for Hiking guides.

Performance in the field

A closeup of the under-bust band on the BRANWYN Essential Supreme bra.

The under-bust band is a generous 2.5” wide and lies relatively flat, although it can curl up a bit during heavier activity.

Support and bounce control

BRANWYN indicates that the Essential Supreme Bra is meant for light activity, and that holds true. Choosing a bra on the lower end of the spectrum for my cup and band size (a medium) meant I felt a bit more compression than I do in their Essential Busty Bra in a large.

Fellow tester Stasia agrees that it’s more supportive than the Busty Bra, “but would still consider it very much a low support/impact bra,” and I agree. For me, using the cup pads provided a little extra hold, as did crossing the straps in the back. I also felt that the thick (2.5”) band was more supportive under my bust than thinner-banded sports bras that I use, and I rarely have to fiddle with it to get it to lie flat during activity.

I’ve felt perfectly supported across the range of activities I’ve tried while wearing this bra, and I haven't needed to adjust it in motion, even during heavy upper-body workouts (say, shoulder day at the gym). While I felt comfortable enough doing short, light jogs while testing, I wouldn’t use this bra for a real run or, say, a HIIT class, since it doesn’t provide enough support or compression for bounce control.

Comfort over extended wear

A closeup of the inside of the BRANWYN Essential Supreme bra.

I owned four BRANWYN bras before testing this one because they are cute, comfortable, and durable — and the same holds true for the Essential Supreme Bra. As someone with some sensory sensitivity, this is the rare bra (sport or otherwise) I can wear all day without feeling hyper-aware of it. Fellow tester Liz Thomas agrees with its unobtrusiveness, saying, “I literally can’t remember exactly when I wore it because it just feels so comfortable that it doesn’t stick out.”

The bra features a seamless construction, which means I haven’t felt any specific points of irritation while wearing it. While some online reviewers mention a slight scratchiness to the wool on first wear, my experience is that it has only grown softer as I’ve worn and washed it—which is to be expected with wool garments.

A closeup of the BRANWYN Essential Supreme bra's shoulder straps.

The 0.75”-wide straps sit flat against the shoulder, which means that they’re comfortable underneath backpack straps.

Adding to the all-day comfort for me is that the 2.5”-wide band stays (mostly) put, lying flat and offering a bit of light under-bust support without feeling as though it's cutting off my circulation, and the 0.75” straps are wide enough to provide support without digging in as the day goes on. I also saw several reviews from people with larger busts than mine mentioning how comfortable they felt in the Essential Supreme Bra, but they didn’t necessarily specify length of wear.

While the optional pads do feel a little bit flimsy, their thinness is actually a boon for comfort, since it doesn’t feel as though you’ve stuffed wads of foam into the cups. That said, I did find that they can migrate a little bit given the large cup pockets built into the bra, so you may need to adjust their position after you’ve put it on to ensure they’re located in the right spot for your build and to minimize their outline showing under the bra material, if that’s important to you. The optional pads you can buy for the newer model are triangular, creating a more aesthetic silhouette under the bra fabric.

All in all, I’ve worn this bra day after day (and have even fallen asleep in it) with zero discomfort, even when soaked in sweat, which is more than I can say for most of the other sports bras I own.

Moisture wicking and breathability

Merino wool is my favorite next-to-skin fabric for sports and outdoor activities, and that’s not just because it feels good against my body, but because it helps with moisture and temperature regulation. I am someone who sweats a lot, and I absolutely despise the feeling of wrestling off a soggy, clammy synthetic sports bra after a hike, run, or gym session.

Given that it’s made primarily of merino fabric, the BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra has never felt clammy against my body. It also dries very quickly, both on and off my body. More than once, I’ve gone directly to the grocery store or run some other errand right after a hard workout, and I’m always surprised (and delighted) by how dry I am.

Merino is an excellent fabric for temperature control, and while I haven’t yet worn the bra in prolonged cold conditions (just during some near-freezing evening temps at high elevation), I have tested it extensively during two triple-digit heat waves. My chest didn’t feel any warmer than the rest of my body, and, in fact, it was the only area that wasn’t dripping with sweat, since merino excels at wicking.

Fit accuracy

As someone who fluctuates between a 36C and D cup, usually on the lower end, I chose the medium size (which is listed as accommodating sizes from 32G to 38A/B). The cut of the bra (which covers more ground than the brand’s Essential Bralette) contains all of my breast tissue, including the bonus material that likes to spill into the armpit region, and the band fits snugly without digging in.

While large was also listed as an option for my cup and band size on the brand’s sizing chart, I know from experience (I own BRANWYN’s Essential Busty Bra, which this one is modeled after, in large) that I prefer a slightly more compressive fit for a sports bra and am glad I sized down. Stasia, however, chose a large, a 36DD+, and said, “It fits perfectly.” Those who are looking for less of a “sports bra” and more of an “everyday, lounge at home soft bra” may want to go with the larger size if two options are listed for your cup and band size on the chart.

Odor resistance

One of the reasons I love wearing merino shirts on backpacking trips, even in the dead of summer, is because they simply don’t accumulate body odor the way synthetics do. As a prolific sweaty Betty, a wool sports bra, then, is a bit of a holy grail item for me both on the trail and while traveling. Before I started testing the Essential Supreme Bra, I always wore BRANWYN’s Essential Bralette for longer trips—in fact, it was my go-to bra for a two-week trip to Denmark earlier this year, and I went the entire trip without washing it.

I wasn’t surprised, then, that the Essential Supreme was just as funk-free on multiple wears. In addition to daily wear, I wore it on a week-long trip to visit my family, on several long weekend trips into the mountains, and during several multi-day backpacking trips.

In fact, as I write this, I’m several days — and several hard workouts — into wearing it without so much as a quick rinse (just in case you’re concerned, I have taken it off at some point every day). I think it’s been soaped up maybe three times in four months. Tester Liz agrees with me on the bra’s stank resistance, saying, “I almost never wash it because the odor doesn’t stick around.”

Ease of use

A closeup of the back of the BRANWYN Essential Supreme bra, showing its adjustable straps.

The Essential Supreme Bra is pretty simple to slip on over your head, especially since it isn’t a tight compression bra. The optional bra pads slide in easily, although they may need to be repositioned once the bra is on. The convertible straps use a simple slider for easy length adjustment and connect to the bra body via flat metal hooks at the ends of each strap and fabric loops on the back of the bra. I’ve found that the straps stay exactly where I’ve adjusted them; I haven’t had to readjust since I first started wearing the bra.

My only quibble is that I’ve had the strap material get caught under the hook at the end of the strap in the wash; the hooks do have some give, which means that you can slightly pry them open or clamp them shut, and I suspect the design of certain washing machines and dryers might do the same to the hardware when your bra is in the wash.

BRANWYN does, however, say that although the bra is machine washable, best practice is to wash it by hand with wool-friendly soap — which I plan on doing to prevent any further machine mishaps. If you machine wash it, use a cotton laundry bag to protect the straps. Lay flat to dry.

Durability

After four months of considerable wear, my bra is nearly in the same shape as it was the first day I wore it. In fact, all of my BRANWYN bras have held their shape, including ones I’ve had for several years and have been tossing in the wash with abandon. I suspect that switching to hand-washing will only increase their longevity.

Like many removable sports bra pads, these do migrate in the large pocket and may need to be readjusted with each wear.

The bra has a built-in pocket in each cup that accommodates an optional pad (purchased separately and available in three sizes: XS/S, M/L, XL/XXL).

Center ruching

The bra is constructed with center ruching knit directly into the front, creating separation for comfort and appearance.

Advice on where to buy

Ortovox 185 Rock’N’Wool Sport Top in black.

MSRP: $75
Material:
Merino, elastic
Available sizes:
XS-XL

The Ortovox 185 Rock’N’Wool Sport Top is Treeline’s pick for Best Wool Sports Bra, and was cited as “the most breathable, fastest-drying, and best sweat-wicking bra in our test,” given that it’s 100% merino wool aside from the elastic support band.

Even though the BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra contains nylon and elastane, the band is actually the same material blend as the rest of the garment, which creates a uniform feel against the body.

While both bras are nearly the same price, the Essential Supreme offers encapsulation, convertible straps, and optional pads that allow for more user customization.

BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra vs. Girlfriend Collective Paloma Racerback Bra

MSRP: $68
Material:
Recycled plastic, spandex
Available sizes:
XXS-6XL

Treeline’s pick for Best Sports Bra for Everyday Wear goes to Girlfriend Collective’s Paloma Racerback Bra, ga compressive, racerback-style bra made from recycled synthetic materials.

While the Paloma offers more compression than the BRANWYN Essential Supreme, allowing users to engage in moderate-impact activities without bounce or strain, its material is not quite as breathable as the Essential Supreme’s majority merino blend. The latter’s quick-drying and odor-resistant qualities, along with its lack of compression, enhance the bra’s all-day wearability.

BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra vs. Ridge Merino Send-It Seamless Sports Bra

The Ridge Merino Send-It Seamless Sports Bra in black.

MSRP: $60
Material:
Recycled nylon, merino wool, spandex
Available sizes:
XS-XL

Ridge Merino’s Send-It Seamless Sports Bra emerged as Treeline’s Best Overall Sports Bra thanks to its medium compression, synthetic-merino blend, breathability, removable pads, and overall comfort. Ridge Merino also wins points in this comparison with a much lower price point—$60 versus the BRANWYN Essential Supreme’s $76 price tag.

The Essential Supreme does have the upper edge when it comes to materials composition, for those who prefer a more natural fabric—it contains 81% merino compared to the Send-It’s 38%. The Essential Supreme does also feature convertible straps versus the static racerback design of the Send-It.

BRANWYN Essential Supreme Bra vs. BRANWYN Essential Busty Bra

MSRP: $62
Material:
Merino, nylon, spandex
Available sizes:
XS-XXL

The Essential Supreme Bra is an upgrade of BRANWYN’s Essential Busty Bra. The difference is that the Essential Supreme features center ruching and the option to add pads for additional structure and separation, eliminating the “uniboob” feel and creating a more defined silhouette. The pads also provide additional modesty for those who prefer a smooth look under their clothing (such as thin t-shirts). The brand created this model based on direct feedback from customers.
