Our verdict
The Hydro Flask 32 oz Wide Mouth with Flex Straw Cap travel water bottle is a rigid, stainless-steel, insulated bottle built for travel scenarios where you want to keep drinks hot or cold for an extended period of time.
We tested it on several trips over the summer on flights, trains, rental cars, and on day hikes where the water remained cool for the entire duration of the trip. During the workday we filled it with cold drinks and it retained its temperature for almost 24 hours. We also filled it with ice that lasted more than 8 hours.
The Hydro Flask water bottle with Flex Strap Cap worked really well in hot climates where we carried cold water for a refreshing drink throughout the day. It has a mixed profile where the top part of the bottle is broad, but the base is narrow, so it still fits in all standard vehicle cup holders and expandable side pockets on travel backpacks. The virtually indestructible double-walled stainless steel body makes it very durable both while exploring new cities, navigating airports and transit, during daily commutes and the workday, and while hiking in the wilderness. With a large carrying capacity of 32 oz, it is perfect for a whole day of exploring.

How we tested
We tested the Hydro Flask travel water bottle on multiple flights with cold water that stayed cool for the duration of the trip. We also tested the bottle on all-day hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park and while walking around Boulder, Colorado, including in hot, 90-degree summer days.
After each trip, we tested how easy it was to take apart, clean thoroughly in the dishwasher, and pack away for the next adventure. We also did drop tests to test durability, and tested the water bottle’s packability and leakproofness in adventure travel backpacks, packable backpacks, vehicle cupholders, and on planes.
We also tested it alongside other travel water bottles and hiking water bottles to compare features, like how easily it travels, how intuitive it is to use, the insulation, capacity, and its portability.
Performance in the field
Packability
The Hydro Flask 32 oz Travel Bottle with Flex Straw Cap does not have a consistent slim profile, so it is best packed inside a bag rather than in the side pocket. However, it has a narrow base so it fits into standard cupholders in cars like a Toyota Highlander as well as a Chevy Malibu. You can even clip it to a purse or sling using a carabiner on the soft, flexible bottle handle. We used it both inside a backpack as well as hand-held while exploring a city and hiking trails in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Leakproofness
The bottle is leakproof when placed horizontally in a bag and upside down in the side pocket of a backpack. We even placed it upside down in a backpack to test the leakproofness and found no leaks or spills.
Ease of filling and drinking
Due to its wide mouth opening, the Hydro Flask travel bottle is easy to fill up in a hotel sink, as well as at water fountains, which we tested multiple times on a trip. The flip-top straw is soft and has a fast flow rate. The lid that comes with this bottle does not have a chug option because of the straw, but you can switch the top with any standard Hydro Flask screw tops for easy access. All Hydro Flask bottles are compatible with both screw top and straw top covers so it is easy to mix and match for more versatility if you want to switch between the straw and chug covers.
Portability and carry
When completely filled with water, the Hydro Flask travel water bottle weighs 32 oz (or 16.5 oz empty) and can be carried comfortably thanks to the soft, flexible carry loop. We also tested how it fit into the side pocket of multiple backpacks like the Fjallraven Kajka X-Latt 45 L as well as cup holders in rental cars.
Durability
The Hydro Flask 32 oz Travel Bottle with Flex Straw Cap didn't show signs of denting, scratching, or leaking thanks to its stainless steel construction. We found this true when packed in suitcases and carry-on luggage. The lid and mouthpiece did not leak, chip, or melt in the dishwasher even after months of use across various landscapes and temperature variations. We tested the bottle’s construction durability by dropping on a gravel path and did not find any dents. However when dropped on a concrete sidewalk, the bottle had a minor dent on the outside but not on the inside so it did not impact bottle performance.
Taste and material performance
We found the bottle has no plastic or silicone taste even when outdoors in extremely high heat (90 degrees F), as we encountered during a hike in Colorado in the summer, and there was no odor retention. We washed it with regular dish washing detergents in a dishwasher after every use. We did not test it with hot beverages because of the plastic straw.
Insulation
The Hydro Flask 32 oz Travel Bottle is an insulated bottle made of double-walled stainless steel which retains the temperature of cold drinks for up to 24 hours. We tested it on a particularly hot day with upwards of 90 degrees F and found it to be true. It performed better in terms of insulation compared to the Ocean Bottle Peak Go (15 hours) and Yeti Rambler (16 hours). Because the straw is plastic, it is not suitable for hot drinks but you can replace the straw cap with a standard Hydro Flask Wide Mouth Lids for use with hot liquids.
