But with so many options available, it can be tricky to find the best ones for you without having to buy a bunch and test them for yourself. That’s why we asked Treeline Review writers, who have already spent many years testing hundreds of energy bars, to share their favorites.

I staunchly hate any sort of energy or protein bar, so finding something to eat on my longer trail runs (besides gels or chewy blocks) was getting difficult. Thankfully, I love the That’s It. Fruit Bars no matter if it’s just a snack during the day or as I’m about to tank on a long run.

That’s It. Fruit Bars

These taste delicious, as the only ingredients are pure fruit, but they never gave me a stomachache as there isn’t any added sugar. They are also easier to chew than shot blocks or hard, crunchy granola bars, which is also ideal, as I really don’t want to expend any extra energy just on chewing.

They don’t have any protein or fat, so they won’t necessarily add long-lasting energy, but they do have a good amount of carbs and healthy sugars (about 20 grams for each bar for both carbs and sugars) to get you through those last few miles. Each bar does have a few grams of fiber, so if you are sensitive to that, try these out before you are in the middle of the wilderness, deep into a run or trek.

The Better Nut Bar

Taste (out of 10): 9/10 for chocolate dipped, 8/10 for regular

Vegan? Yes
Digestion issues: None
Food sensitivities: Contains many kinds of seeds, no nuts, but produced in a facility that may contain nuts and tree nuts.

With over 10,000 miles of backpacking under my feet, it felt safe to say I’m sick of all the bars.  But a couple years ago, I got to sample The Better Nut Bar at the PCT Days festival in Cascade Locks, OR, and to my great surprise, I loved it!

The Better Nut Bar

This whole foods concoction somehow manages to taste both healthy and like a treat. The texture is a nice balance of crunchy, thanks to the quinoa and seeds, and a little chewy from the sunflower seed butter and dried berries, which also provide just enough sweetness.

Choice is simple: there are only two varieties of the bar available: original and chocolate covered. While the original is a solid choice, the chocolate covered is the one I find myself still excited to pull out of my food bag for a snack.

A steady diet of sweet, hard, salty, overly processed, boring energy bars had made me resistant to any bar’s charms. For the past two years I have eaten no bars. Then a friend asked me if I’d tried Thunderbird bars.

Thunderbird Bar

Thunderbird bars are different. Thunderbirds have no added sugar, are gluten-free, dairy free, grain-free, soy-free, vegan, plant based and non-GMO, contain all natural ingredients and come in 14 different flavors. My favorites are Mexican Hot Chocolate, Texas Maple Pecan, and Chili Pepita Pineapple. Each 1.7-oz bar has about 220 calories and are just sweet enough, chewy enough, nutritious enough and tasty enough that I always carry a couple in my pack these days. Thunderbird Bars don’t get too hard with age, too frozen in cold temperatures, or too soft in warm temperatures.

Thunderbird offers a 30-day guarantee that you’ll like their bars and just introduced 0.7-oz bite-sized nuggets.

SunRype FruitSource

Taste (out of 10): 10/10
Fillingness per bar? 6/10
Weight: 37 g / 1.3 oz
Price: $1.45-$2/bar
Calories per bar: 120
Protein/Carbs/Fat per bar: 0g protein; 0g fat; 32g carbohydrate
Top flavor options: Blueberry pomegranate; apple mango

Digestion issues: None; just fruit juices and purees
Food sensitivities: Gluten free, nut free, no added sugar

I discovered SunRype Fruitsource at a grocery store during a backpacking resupply and I've been enjoying them ever since. Unlike tough fruit leather, Fruitsource bars are soft and squishy. Rather than a strip of leather, these fruit bars are half an inch thick and easy to eat. Chewing on them isn't a chore that leaves my jaw tired.

SunRype FruitSource

These bars brought the texture and taste of fresh fruit to the trail, sealed into a shelf-stable rectangle. Despite no added sugar, the flavor is dynamic—sweet and smooth while also tart. These bars strike me as a grown-up version of fruit snacks or gummies that also prevents my hands from being sticky. The bars keep the smooth chewy satisfaction of a fruit snack while bringing more complexity and fiber to my snacking experience. The fruit sugar gives me a good burst of energy to climb up to the next mountain pass, and the many flavors keep me entertained when I struggle with food boredom on trail.

The Trader Joe’s ABC (Almond Butter Cocoa) Bars are my go-to, on-the-run snack. They’re tasty, satiating, and a great pick-me-up when I’m out and about.

Trader Joe’s ABC Bars

a box of Trader Joe’s ABC bars on a countertop with two bars resting next to it

The ingredients are simple, and more than anything, I appreciate that they’re free of my food intolerances, like soy, milk, eggs, and peanuts (the packaging says “may contain” those ingredients due to production, but they are not explicit ingredients, and that’s good enough for me). Because they’re vegan and free of most allergens, I can also feel good carrying them around and offering them to others.

On top of tasting good and having simple ingredients, they’re more affordable than a lot of other packaged energy bars (at least the ones without my food intolerances). If you don’t live near a Trader Joe’s, you can find them on Amazon, too.

There’s nothing particularly flashy about the nutrition profile or ingredient list—they’re simple, tasty bars that can keep you fueled between meals, during activities like hiking, or on-the-go while you’re traveling.

Phun Bar “Free For All”

Taste (out of 10): 9.5/10
Fillingness per bar? 8/10, fairly filling, good pick-me-up, but not too filling
Weight: 2 oz
Price: $3.75
Calories per bar: 300
Protein/Carbs/Fat per bar: 7g protein/26g carbohydrates/18g fat
Top flavor options: Cranberries + chocolate (vegan), coffee + cherry + chocolate, apricot + chai
Organic? Non GMO?
Vegan? Yes (one flavor is vegan, others contain honey)
Digestion issues: None!
Food sensitivities: Dairy free, gluten free, vegan (some contain honey, some contain caffeine)

Not dense, not too chewy, and with some great and unique flavor options, Phun Bars are just that…nutritious but fun! I’ve had these hiking, running, backpacking, and even crewing a few aid stations—they are great if you need some calories or just want an afternoon snack.

Phun Bar “Free For All”

The cranberries and chocolate (vegan version of their original recipe) wins my vegan vote, but the coffee and cherry chocolate and apricot and chai would be close seconds.

The various Phun Bars are made with quality ingredients, like gluten-free oats, rice puffs, pumpkin seeds, agave, cinnamon, vanilla, sea salt, and a variety of fruits. They are all gluten free as well, and each contain 7g of protein and 300 calories.

GoMacro Bars

Taste: 8/10
Fillingness: 8/10
Weight: ~2.3 oz (65g)
Price: ~$3.20/bar
Calories: 290
Protein/Carbs/Fat: 11g / ~34g / ~12g
Top flavors: Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, Maple Sea Salt
Organic/Non-GMO: Yes/Yes
Vegan: Yes
Digestion: Can feel dense for some
Food Sensitivities: Gluten-free; not nut-free

GoMacro MacroBars strike a good balance between whole-food ingredients and trail-ready performance, and could be considered a protein bar to some, but typically have only around 11-12g of protein per bar.

GoMacro Bars

My favorite flavor, the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, has a dense, chewy texture with a natural sweetness that doesn’t feel overly processed. However, I will say that they can feel a bit sticky in their texture, especially when it is cold outside. I like the sticky texture, but it could be off-putting to some.

Their size and calorie density make them an excellent choice for a mid-day snack on the trail when you don’t want to stop for a full lunch or are aiming for something light to take with you on the go. The organic, non-GMO, and vegan ingredient list is a standout for me when prioritizing sustainability and cleaner labels in pre-packaged foods. Overall, it’s a reliable option for steady energy, especially if you prefer minimally processed, plant-based fuel.

South Forty Snacks Tropical Fruit Bars

Taste (out of 10): 10/10
Fillingness per bar? 5/10
Weight: 1.2 oz
Price: $1.83/bar (18 pack)
Calories per bar: 110-120
Protein/Carbs/Fat per bar: 1g protein/24-27g carb/0g fat
Top flavor options: Mango/Pineapple
Organic? Non GMO? Non-gmo
Vegan? Yes
Digestion issues: No issues
Food sensitivities: Gluten free and nut free

I first saw the South Forty Snacks fruit bars at PCT Days in 2025 and loved the simple ingredient list and soft texture. These fruit bars have 1-3 ingredients that are 100% real fruit.

South Forty Snacks Tropical Fruit Bars

I don’t know about you, but when I am hiking or backpacking I find it really hard to pack out whole fruits and my body is always craving fruits and veggies. These bars help fill that need for real food that is minimally processed on the trail or when I am traveling. I keep several boxes on hand at my house and they are in my grab-and-go snack area for pop-up trips or day hikes and runs.

The real fruit is easy to digest and eat without feeling like I need to follow it up with a liter of water. There is no aftertaste or super sticky texture that would make them hard to eat. They are also very portable as the soft texture keeps the bars from getting broken at the bottom of my pack. I have “discovered” bars at the bottom of my pack that probably went on many trail adventures, and when I finally got around to eating them they were just as soft and tasty as the bars fresh from the new box.

South Forty Snacks also carries nut bars that have higher protein and fat content for those who are looking for a different type of energy. The nut bars are crunchy and have a very short ingredient list. If you pair a nut bar with a fruit bar you can hit quite a few taste and texture cravings on the trail.

They are a little on the pricey side, but so much easier than hiking with a whole mango and trying to eat it while hiking without making a giant mess.

Food sensitivities: Gluten free

I normally hate energy bars. The texture is weird, and I’m only eating them for their ease of portability.

That was until I discovered RXBAR. These bars are DELICIOUS. I’m particularly fond of the Chocolate Sea Salt flavor. I keep them around my house as an indulgent little snack because they are the closest thing to a “healthy” brownie I’ve ever had that was worth eating.

RXBAR

person holding a packaged RXBAR close to the camera

I particularly love the mini bars. They are the perfect snack on and off the trail. While the Chocolate Sea Salt is my favorite, I will happily eat any of the four flavors.

RXBAR prints the ingredients right on the front of the box and on every bar wrapper. It feels good to know the ingredients include egg whites, nut varieties, and dates. The texture to me is similar to a dense brownie or cake. I think that is why the texture is okay for me in these bars. It matches the flavors and feels like a little treat.

They also recently came out with a Nut Butter & Oat flavor that is lower in protein and higher carbs. They also have a couple of high-protein bars with 18g of protein.

I always have a box around the house and a few to throw in all my adventure bags. I love them for hiking, biking, and paddle boarding.

Now they do advertise these as protein bars, but they are my go-to energy bars. Yum!

Food sensitivities: Gluten free, not nut free

Over decades of adventure and exploring I’ve probably tried hundreds of different energy and meal bars—dating back to chewing on the original PowerBars in the ‘80s while riding mountain bikes in Maryland’s Appalachian Mountains. So many are tough to chew and to digest. I’ve found that the ProBar Meal Bars are easy to digest and have enough sustenance to keep you going when you can’t stop or don’t want to stop to eat a full meal.

ProBar Meal Bar

While ProBar has 12 varieties of its meal bars, I prefer the varieties with fruits with berries. They provide a nice flavor and texture punch in what would otherwise be just nuts and seeds. My go-to is the Wholeberry Blast with strawberries and blueberries, but to avoid flavor exhaustion I like to mix it up with Blueberry Muffin and Superfruit Slam.

Honey Stinger Nut + Seed Bar

Taste (out of 10): 10/10
Fillingness per bar? 8/10
Weight: 1.98 oz
Price: $3/bar (12 pack)
Calories per bar: 260

Top flavor options: Peanut sunflower seed and almond pumpkin seed
Organic? Non GMO? Non GMO

Digestion issues: None
Food sensitivities: Gluten free? Gluten free, contains nuts

After backpacking the Appalachian Trail in 2015, the thought of consuming an energy bar of any kind made my stomach ache. But when I found the Honey Stinger Nut + Seed Bar, the consumption of it felt less like a chore and more pleasure-oriented. It was basically like eating a Snickers bar but with less guilt.

Honey Stinger Nut + Seed Bar

Unlike many of the protein bars I forced myself to consume over the course of four months, the Honey Stinger Nut + Seed Bars neither felt dense nor cakey, which may have been the main reason they piqued my interest. Intriguingly, their ingredient list is also relatively whole, and made with clean ingredients. About four years after the initial release of these bars, they’re still my go-to snack for long days in the mountains.

Bobo’s Stuff’d

Taste (out of 10): 7/10
Fillingness per bar? 6-9/10 (depends which size)
Weight: 1.3-2.5 oz
Price: $1/bar (bites), $1.50/bar (12 pack sandwiches), $2.74/bar (12 pack bars)
Calories per bar: 140-310
Protein/Carbs/Fat per bar: Varies widely by flavor/ filling
Top flavor options: Strawberry lemonade, peanut butter and jelly, apple pie
Organic? Non GMO? Non-GMO
Vegan? Yes
Digestion issues: None
Food sensitivities: Gluten free

Like many of the other Treeline writers, I am so sick of most bars. After having eaten hundreds (thousands?) of bars, I immediately spit out bars made with fig, protein blends, or artificial sweeteners. I find Bobo’s Stuff’d resemble something made in a bakery rather than something made in a lab, so they are one of the few I still eat.

Bobo’s Stuff’d

I enjoy the contrast of the stout, yet not dry, oat bar and the sweet (but not too sweet) filling they put in the middle of the Stuff’d. They hold up well in the pack too. They don’t crush into bits, melt, or become difficult to bite through in the cold. I only give them a 7 out of 10 for taste because they aren’t a slice of pizza–but I do still crave them after being out for a month. I’m also a sucker for anything lemon flavored.

Stuff’d come in three sizes—bites, sandwiches, and bars. The bites are the right size when you don’t want to commit too much into a snack. The bars are nearly a meal replacement for me. Fillings include strawberry lemonade, apple pie, peanut butter and berry jam, strawberry, grape, and something resembling Nutella.

BUILT Puff

Taste (out of 10): 9/10
Fillingness per bar? 6/10
Weight: 1.41 oz
Price: $2.50/bar in a box of 12
Calories per bar: 140
Protein/Carbs/Fat per bar: 17g/13g /3g
Top flavor options: Coconut, Brownie Batter, Peanut Butter
Organic? Non GMO? No
Vegan? No
Digestion issues: No
Food sensitivities: Gluten-free except for a couple flavors that contain cookies

The main thing I don’t like about protein bars is that either the carb:protein ratio is wildly carb-heavy, they contain non-sugar sweeteners like monkfruit/stevia (UGH, dealbreaker), or they just taste terrible. BUILT Bars are an excellent solution: 17g of protein, 13g of carbs, and no gross non-sugar nonsense. I’d probably eat them even if they tasted terrible. Fortunately, they do not.

BUILT Puff

BUILT Bars taste like a treat without being too sweet. Coconut is the universal favorite in my household, with brownie and peanut butter also popular. My wife and roommate buy boxes and boxes from TikTok and bring them to work so they’ll have something to snack on. They have a fluffy texture somewhere between marshmallow and mochi.

Functionally speaking, they’re not heavy in your bag, and they hold up well—it takes a few hot days forgotten in the car for them to melt (when they melt, the marshmallowy texture does collapse, but they still taste good). The protein is a whey/collagen blend. There are a variety of flavors, including fruity ones, sour ones, and more traditional candy-bar-coded ones, so it seems like there’s something for everyone.

While they’re on the lighter side—140 calories isn’t going to fill you up for super long, even with that high protein count—they are a high-quality snack that will get you through to your next meal.

I've eaten a lot of Kind bars over the years, and they're still my go-to energy bar for hiking and biking. I’m still not sick of them, as happens for me with a lot of energy bars (I’m looking at you, Clif Bars).

KIND Nut Bars

Kind has broadened their offerings over the years, but I’m talking about the kind with nuts in them. I find that the nuts keep me sustained for longer than most other energy bars.

I also like that they’re available almost everywhere. Gas stations, Walmart, mini marts—I never fail to find them on a resupply.

I like all of the flavors, but if I had to choose one, it would be the caramel almond and sea salt. I love the caramel flavor, and the salt always tastes good during exercise.

Pro tip: if you find yourself dreading to eat an energy bar in your pack because you’re sick of them, try salting the bar. It really helps with palatability!

Epic Bar

Taste (out of 10): 10/10
Fillingness per bar? 7/10
Weight: 1.3 oz
Price: $2.63/bar (12 pack)
Calories per bar: 130 calories
Protein/Carbs/Fat per bar: 7g/8g/8g
Top flavor options: Bison, bacon, cranberry
Organic? Non GMO? Grass-fed
Vegan? No
Digestion issues: No
Food sensitivities: Gluten free, Paleo-friendly

In over 20,000 miles of thru-hiking, I can't stomach eating another bar. The exception is a meat stick and the very finest one in my opinion is the Epic Bar.

Epic Bar

I love all the flavors, but the bison, bacon, cranberry is the one that I crave the most. When no other food seems to satiate me, the almost perfect balance of protein, carbs, and fats does it for me. While not quite a high protein bar (since it is so small, it only has 7 g of protein), the ratio of protein to calories seems to do the trick.

The flavor is salty with a hint of sweet from the cranberry and a zip of tang from vinegar and (non-dairy) lactic acid. The meat has no nitrates or nitrites, which (for me) means no bloating or headaches. My only complaint is that it isn't very big. If it were twice the size, it'd be a great source of protein, but would also be a very expensive bar, partly because the meat is grass-fed and the bacon is from vegetarian-fed animals. The ingredients are simple and clean. One of my tramily (trail family) members has many food sensitivities and this gluten-free bar is one of the only she can eat.

This is the bar I save for the top of a hard climb. It's the reward after a rough day of backpacking.

What to look for in an energy bar

treeline writer becca downs eating a trader joe’s abc bar mid trail run

Taste

If you don’t like the taste or texture of the energy bar, you aren’t going to want to eat it. We recommend choosing energy bars you actually enjoy eating and likely won’t get sick of.

Fillingness

Energy bars typically are meant to provide quick energy. Some bars can be meal replacements, while others are just filling enough to hold you over between meals. Looking at calories, protein, fat, and fiber will help you determine how filling the bar will be.

Grams of Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fat

Some experts say that nutrition has more to do with the balance of protein to carbohydrates and fat. The Mayo Clinic says that protein should be 10% to 35% of calories, so keeping your protein balanced with carbohydrates and fat may be necessary. We note grams of carbohydrates and fats so you can see whether each bar can work within your overall macronutrient counts.

Price

Most energy bars we recommended cost between $1 and $3 per bar. You can often find a better value by buying in bulk from places like Costco or Amazon.

Organic and non-GMO

Many outdoors people prefer organic foods (which, by definition, are non-GMO) as they are typically associated with lower pollution and carbon emissions, better soil health, and higher biodiversity. We note when bars are made with organic ingredients and are certified non GMO.

Vegan or vegetarian

person holding an RXBAR split in half

Fortunately for vegans and vegetarians, there are plenty of tasty, filling protein bars available to suit those diets. Most of the bars in this guide are vegetarian (with the exception of Epic Bars), and we note which ones are vegan.

Gluten-free

While many energy bars contain gluten, there are also some great gluten-free options available. Of the bars we recommend in this guide, we note which ones are gluten free.

Nut-free

Nuts are a natural source of protein and fat, but for those of us with nut allergies, it can eliminate many protein bar options. While some of our favorite bars have nuts, we note which bars are nut free.
