Our Verdict

The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 is a stellar all-around trail running shoe that improves on the original Prodigio model. The original Prodigio was already great, but the Prodigio 2 seems to improve on every one of the original’s shortcomings without ruining anything that was already great about them.

It has the right amount of cushion to balance all-day comfort with stability on loose terrain. It has excellent grip on a variety of surfaces, from hard-packed dirt to loose rock, scree, gravel, and even pavement. It has an extremely springy and comfortable midsole with a more pronounced rocker than the previous Prodigio. And it has more cushion around the heel, tongue, and ankle, which was a literal pain point of the previous version.

We tested this shoe in Arizona, New Mexico, and southern California during winter and early spring. We used them for everything from short 3-mile trail runs on smooth trails to marathon distances over more rugged terrain, peak bagging, off-trail exploration, and every type of run in between. We also used them on backpacking trips, where their all-day comfort shined as a fast hiking shoe.

The Prodigio 2 won best overall in our men’s trail running shoes guide. We think most trail runners will find that this is an excellent, versatile choice for everyday running.

How We Tested

We tested the Prodigio 2 while trail running, hiking, and backpacking in Arizona, New Mexico, California, and Colorado during this winter and spring.

Our main tester wore them scrambling up desert peaks in the Sky Islands region of Arizona, and through the Gila River canyons of New Mexico. Our women’s testers wore them on trails in southern California, and on rocky and hardpacked dirt trails in the Colorado Front Range. We wore them on fast runs on smooth trails and dirt roads, and on gnarly, poorly maintained trails in remote corners of the world. We used them on exposed granite slabs, on loose, rocky trails, and in mud to test their grip.

We also tested them alongside similar models from our Best Men’s Trail Running Shoes and Best Women’s Trail Running Shoes guides, including the original La Sportiva Prodigio.

Performance in the Field

Traction

The Prodigio 2 has excellent traction for a trail running shoe. The FriXion XT 2.0 rubber outsole grips on loose, rock terrain, over scree, and on slick rock surfaces as well. It also grips hard packed dirt well. And while it isn’t the best on extremely loose or muddy terrain, the shoe will give you enough traction to get through short sessions.

Breathability

The mesh upper is very breathable. We’ve worn these shoes on 25-30 mile runs in the southern Arizona desert, with the afternoon high temperature in the upper 80s. Even after wearing the shoes all day, our feet didn’t overheat. And since the mesh is so breathable we never have issues with swamped out feet, either.

Midsole Rebound

These are some of the most responsive trail running shoes we've tested to date. La Sportiva’s XFlow nitrogen infused EVA midsole foam is very springy, and it's noticeable the minute you put the shoes on.

The Prodigio 2 has more cushion than some might want, and though it has a supercritical EVA foam midsole, it’s not a super shoe, either. If you’re looking for a race-day shoe, these will work, but there are faster options, such as the La Sportiva Prodigio Pro. But for everyone else, we think these shoes hit the sweet spot between light, nimble, rugged, and versatile.

Comfort on Long Descents

These shoes are incredibly comfortable on long descents. The mid-foot cage holds the foot securely in place on downhills, and the padded ankle, heel, and tongue add to the comfort. Also, the wide, but not too wide, toebox means your toes won’t smash into the front of the shoe on long descents. On a steep 12-mile downhill run, our feet didn’t slip around or feel any discomfort. When we got to the bottom we were tired, but our feet didn’t feel cooked.

Performance on Rocky/Technical Terrain

The grip on the outsole is great for long distances across rough terrain. We’re confident enough in these shoes that we’d use them in place of approach shoes on a climbing trip. We’ve logged a lot of miles on the Arizona Trail in the Prodigio 2, and most of those miles are rocky, steep, and technical. We’ve also done a lot of off-trail scrambling up peaks in southern Arizona, and much of that terrain has been extremely rocky and technical.

How Does the Rocker Shape and Wide Platform Affect Gait and Stability?

For a high-cushioned, rockered shoe, we think the Prodigio 2 provides excellent stability. The more pronounced rocker adds forward propulsion without destabilizing the foot. Compared to another high-cushion, high-grip trail runner, the HOKA Speedgoat 7, we think the Prodigio 2 is more nimble and stable. The platform is wide enough to provide ample cushion and support without negatively affecting your gait.

Features

Upper Material

The upper on the Prodigio 2 uses La Sportiva’s recycled high-tenacity AirMesh that is highly breathable and very quick drying while maintaining durability. It has a nylon mid-foot cage that adds structure and stability, keeping the foot locked in without being restrictive. The recycled thermoformed TPU mudguard and toe cap provide durability and help protect your feet.

We’ve worn these shoes on runs that last all day, with highs in the upper 80s, and they haven’t felt noticeably hot.

The Prodigio 2 has a cushioned tongue and more cushion around the ankle. This added cushion is an upgrade from the original, which caused some people discomfort around the ankle. This added padding makes the shoes more comfortable and also helps lock the foot in place without needing to wrench on the laces.

Midsole and Cushioning

The Prodigio 2 has 34-28 mm of stack height, which is slightly more cushion than average but not a maximum cushion shoe, either. The midsole is made with La Sportiva’s XFlow nitrogen-infused foam. This midsole is very responsive; it feels even springier than the original Prodigio while also feeling more cushioned despite having the same stack height as the original.

We think the Prodigio 2 has just the right amount of cushion for daily use. It pads your feet enough for long runs, but it’s low enough to the ground for technical trails. And if it had more cushion, it would be heavier, then it wouldn’t be as cut out for speed work.

Outsole and Traction

La Sportiva is known for making footwear with sticky, grippy rubber outsoles. The Prodigio 2 is no exception. These shoes are seriously grippy. The outsole uses the Bi-compound FriXion XT 2.0 outsole. This bi-compound design features strategically placed stickier rubber in the center of the outsole for maximum grip, and uses a more durable rubber on the sides, which typically see the most wear.

Lugs

The 4mm Laspo lugs are grippy without being obnoxiously big. The lugs are part of what makes these shoes as versatile as they are. The U-shaped lugs do an excellent job of gripping loose dirt, but they aren’t big and cumbersome enough to get in the way when running on hard-packed dirt, gravel, or even short sections of pavement.

These shoes are great for starting on a dirt road or even pavement, then moving on to technical trails. The grip and traction that the lugs and sticky rubber provide inspire confidence on even the most technical descents.

Toe Cap

The Prodigio 2’s recycled, thermoformed TPU toe cap and mudguard provide coverage and protection for your feet. The mudguard, which is a fancy name for TPU-rubber laminated onto the mesh, keeps dirt and debris out of your shoes and protects the mesh from tearing. This dual-TPU coverage is great for navigating rocky or sandy terrain. We’ve done a fair amount of running through desert washes on the way to desert peaks, and the TPU overlays help.

Fit and Sizing

Like the original Prodigio, the Prodigio 2 fits notably wider than other La Sportiva models. While we wouldn't call it a true wide fit, it is on the wide side and can accommodate a variety of foot shapes. Testers Sam and Liz both have relatively wide feet, and both found the Prodigio 2 fit them.

The sizing for La Sportiva, however, will always be weird for those used to American shoe sizing. If you have wider feet, you should consider getting a full size larger than you normally wear in these shoes, as with any other La Sportiva shoes you buy. However, our women’s tester wore her usual size and had no issues.

Insole

The Prodigio 2 features a 5mm XFlow footbed made with 100% recycled TPU with nitrogen added, which adds to the shoe's overall comfort and bounciness. This is an upgrade from the OrthoLite Hybrid insole in the original Prodigio, which contained only 5% recycled rubber and 15% production-waste foam.

Ride and Rocker Design

The Prodigio 2 has a more pronounced progressive rocker design than the original, making this shoe feel fast and efficient as you stride. The rocker also seems to add a slight amount of extra cushion to the forefoot, making it feel more capable for longer distances than the original. This refined rocker feels like a significant upgrade from the original.

Protection

It has a PU-coated FlowFilm to protect the underside of your feet from sharp rocks. This FlowFilm insert is a nylon mesh built into the midsole that acts as a protective barrier. Combined with the dense midsole foam, these shoes provide adequate protection for the bottoms of your feet. They won’t protect your feet from every rock, as Sam found when careening down a steep, rocky descent, but they do seem to help.

Sustainability and Materials

The Prodigio 2 uses a lot of recycled materials. The lining uses recycled 3D Air Mesh (in the heel) and recycled multi-layer mesh (in the forefoot). The upper features recycled high-tenacity AirMesh. The toe cap, mudguard, and laces are all made from recycled materials. The insole is made from 100% recycled TPU. These shoes are also vegan friendly.

Cushioning: High
Outsole: FriXion XF 2.0 dual compound rubber

Fit: Medium-wide

The Prodigio Pro is really a different shoe altogether, compared to the Prodigio 2. The Pro has a slightly wider platform, a one-piece TPU-reinforced webbing upper for an extremely precise and stable fit, and is even lighter and more responsive. We think the Prodigio 2 is great for everyday runs and training, while the Pro is a high-performing long-distance trail race shoe.

The Prodigio Max has more cushion than the Prodigio 2. It also has a TPU-wire reinforced upper, similar to the Prodigio Pro, which makes the shoe more durable. If you want more cushion than the Prodigio 2, the Prodigio Max is worth considering. Learn more in our in-depth review of the La Sportiva Prodigio Max.

La Sportiva Prodigio 2 vs. Similar Trail Running Shoes

The Prodigio 2 is one of our favorite cushioned trail running shoes. It's more stable and responsive than the HOKA Speedgoat, though the Speedgoat has larger lugs, so it provides better traction in loose, slippery conditions. Other high-cushion trail runners like the Altra Timp have about the same amount of cushion, but the midsole doesn’t feel as lively as the Prodigio 2. Another Altra shoe, the Olympus, has more cushion, but it sacrifices ground feel to get that extra cushion. The Olympus is also much less nimble and stable.

Should you buy the La Sportiva Prodigio 2?

Buy if you're looking for a trail running shoe that’s versatile, grippy, quick, stable, and nimble. If you liked the original Prodigio, you should definitely buy the Prodigio 2. Also, if you didn’t like the original Prodigio because they weren’t comfortable around the ankle, then you should still give the Prodigio 2 a try. The Prodigio 2 is the shoe we’ve reached for most often over the past two months of testing, so simply put, if you need a running shoe, then you should buy these.

Skip if you want more than 34-28 mm of stack height or want a zero-drop shoe. Also, skip this shoe if you don’t want to buy a running shoe (in which case, why did you read this far?)

Returns and advice on where to buy

In general for shoes, we recommend purchasing from a place with easy or free returns, like REI or Zappos. Trying on shoes is an important way to get the sizing right. With both those retailers, if your funds allow, you can buy two sizes and easily return one. Additionally, check reviews to see whether other users recommend sizing up or down.

Cushioning: Low
Outsole: FriXion XF 2.0 dual compound rubber

Fit: Narrow (but also offered in wide version)

The La Sportiva Bushido III is a very low-cushion shoe that’s ideal for short runs in technical terrain where traction and ground feel are top priorities. The Bushidos are a go-to shoe for mountain scrambling as well, and its narrower fit feels more like a rock shoe (though it does come in wide sizing). MSRP: $160
Weight: 1 lb 6.3 oz (men), 1 lb 2.6 oz (women)

Drop: 0 mm
Fit: Wide

The Lone Peak 9+ is very popular with thru-hikers and trail runners. It’s a zero-drop shoe with less cushion than the Prodigio 2. The Lone Peak has a much wider toe box and a less responsive midsole. We think the Lone Peak is great for people who want a zero drop shoe for running, and it’s also a great hiking shoe. The Prodigio 2, on the other hand, feels like a high performing trail running shoe.

Drop: 5 mm
Fit: Regular (also offered in wide fit)

The Speedgoat has more cushion and larger lugs than the Prodigio 2. The Speedgoat’s deeper lugs provide better traction in loose or muddy conditions. It isn’t quite as stable as the Prodigio 2, though. The maximum cushion design and excellent traction make the Speedgoat a great option for long runs and thru-hiking. But, the Prodigio 2 is faster, more agile, and springier.

The Speedgoat has been the best overall winner in our Best Women’s Trail Running Shoe guide. While we’re working on a thorough review of the HOKA Speedgoat 7s, check out our in-depth review of the HOKA Speedgoat 6 trail running shoes.
