How to Make the Most of Prime Day--even if you don't shop Amazon!

Amazon Prime Day is July 12th and 13th. Other retailers are competing by offering Black Friday level discounts, too! Here’s how to make the most of Prime Day—even if you don’t aren't shopping at Amazon.

We’ll see Lightning Deals that will disappear in hours. Walmart has its own competing Rollback Sales.

So how can you make the most of it, score some deals on outdoor gear, and put in the least effort possible?

1) decide whether you need to buy this—or can rent it

  • Would you prefer to purchase or rent this item? Is it even available for rental? Some items aren’t available at all rental stores (for example, snow gear can be tricky to rent in some Southwest locations).

  • Will you require specific sizing or technical features that you are unlikely to find in rental gear?

  • How often will you use this item? If it’s more than a few times, it’s worth purchasing and getting a quality item that will last.

  • Sometimes, renting can be more of a hassle than owning. Will it be inconvenient to swing by a rental place after work on a Friday?

  • Conversely, will finding a storage place for it once you own it be difficult?

  • If you own this item, are you more likely to go outside and do this activity than if you relied on rentals? If you think this is the case, it’s a good reason to purchase.

The Deals Finder page is where we report sales on gear items we already recommend—products that are excellent enough to pay full price for that just happen to be on sale.

2. KNOW WHAT ACTUALLY IS A DEAL AND WHAT IS JUST HYPE

Often, Prime Day algorithms elevate an item on sale that is well, always on sale.

We'll be scanning thousands of Prime Day deals throughout the day to find the sales that actually stack up against historic discount data.

Check our Deal Finder for postings of price drops actually worth your trouble. We'll do the work so you don't have to.

3. AMAZON ISN'T THE ONLY PLACE WITH SALES THIS WEEK

Historically, other online stores will have massive discounts during the same week as Prime Day to compete.

Here’s are the places we've found so far that will have sales on outdoor gear going on July 11th-13th.

  • REI - members discounts and up to 50% off gear items

  • Evo - price match guarantee and 365+1 day return policy

  • Backcountry - up to 50% off gear items

  • Moosejaw - up to 70% off gear items

We hope you’re able to make the best of Prime Day and adjacent sales at other vendors. Happy hunting!
