What to consider before buying a gift for adventure dogs
Before picking the perfect gift, keep these in mind:
Size and adjustability: Dogs come in all shapes, from lean runners to stocky mountain pups. Look for harnesses, packs, or jackets with adjustable straps and multiple sizing options.
Activity type: Do they mostly hike, run, ski, or camp? Choose gear that supports those adventures — breathable vests for running, insulated layers for snow, rugged packs for hiking.
Seasonal conditions: Hot desert trails, snowy alpine tours, and wet spring hikes all call for different fabrics and features (ventilation, waterproofing, insulation).
Durability: Outdoor dogs are tough on gear. Reinforced stitching, chew-resistant fabrics, and sturdy buckles will last through mud, snow, and sharp rock.
Comfort and mobility: Gear should allow natural movement — no chafing or restriction when running, climbing, or jumping.
Ease of use for owners: Collapsible bowls, washable fabrics, and lightweight designs make gear more likely to be used on every outing.
How we selected the gifts
Every item in this guide was chosen because it’s dog gear we’ve tested, used, or seen consistently perform well in the field — whether that’s during weekend campouts, multi-day backcountry trips, or months-long gear reviews. We focused on gear that’s practical, durable, and genuinely improves life at camp.
Our picks range from small comforts and clever tools to premium upgrades and big-ticket items that make it that much easier and more fun to be outdoors with your dog.
These are essentials that you'll find in our how to guides for:
skiing with your dog
Or our general hiking with your dog gear checklist.
It also includes non-essential items that our dogs just happen to love.
Many of these gifts are pieces we’ve personally given, received, or relied on ourselves — so you can feel confident you’re choosing something a dog lover and their pet will actually want and use.

My dogs come everywhere with me, so I use the Necto to check on my car’s temperature when loading or unloading my vehicle for a trip, stopping at a gas station during a road trip, running into a restaurant to pick up food, and more.”

Fido Pro The Airlift
Emergency & First Aid Gear
The Fido Airlift is the one thing that I never leave behind when on the trail with my dogs. While I hope we don't need to use it when we're out, it gives me peace of mind to know that if my dog becomes injured, I can carry him to safety with relative ease. Compared to other dog emergency rescue slings on the market, the Airlift is more lightweight and packable, but it also happens to be the easiest to deploy in an emergency and the most comfortable for the dog and human when in use.
Quick Specs:
Price: $95
Best for: Adventurous dog owners who hike, ski, or explore off-grid
Ideal conditions: Trails, backcountry, or remote areas
Key highlights: Allows safe, comfortable dog rescue in an emergency without added bulk, sling distributes weight evenly, lightweight and compact, endorsed by search and rescue
Why it’s a great gift:
Provides peace of mind for anyone hiking with their dog
The sling distributes weight evenly, making it safer and more comfortable for both dog and human
Extremely lightweight and compact, so it’s easy to bring “just in case” on every adventure
For more options for pet health, see our Best Dog First Aid Kit.
“My 60lb GSP mix has been my primary hiking and overall adventure companion for over eight years. During that time, I've had the misfortune of having to carry him out due to a severe leg injury that required emergency surgery. When that happened, I didn't have a rescue sling, so I had to carry him in my arms for over a mile back to the car. Not only was this difficult for me, but it was also uncomfortable for him while he was injured. Since then, I've invested in the Fido Airlift Pro just in case anything like that were to happen again. ”

Kurgo Loft Wander Bed
Camp Comfort & Sleep
The Kurgo Loft Dog Travel Bed is for the dog who’s always on the go. It is the one dog bed that has lasted us over six years of heavy use on road trips, car camping, backpacking, paddle camping, and daily use as a "place mat” at home. While it has its fair share of wear, it remains an easy bed to grab when we head out the door and is among my dog's favorite places to rest after a long day of adventuring together.
Quick Specs:
Price: $54.36–$79.95
Best for: Travel-loving dogs and owners who value comfort and convenience
Ideal conditions: Indoors or outdoors–perfect for road trips, RVs, and campsites
Key highlights: Rolls up quickly and packs small for easy carrying, strong materials, a waterproof base protects against dirt and damp ground
Why it’s a great gift:
Gives their dog a clean, comfortable place to rest wherever they roam
Rolls up like a sleeping bag, making it simple to pack and carry
Durable materials withstand rough use, muddy paws, and the occasional spill
Easy to clean—just toss it in the wash (hang dry) and it’s ready for the next trip
For more options, see Best Camping Dog Beds.
“The Kurgo Loft Dog Travel Bed may be the dog bed we've had the longest and used the most. While it has some wear, including one seam rip, a burn hole from a stray coal around the fire, and a failed pocket zipper, it remains my dog's favorite place to rest both at home and when on the go.
We've brought this bed everywhere, from paddle camping as a bed in the bottom of the canoe to keep him dry to a backpacking sleeping pad to keep him warm and comfortable around camp and while he sleeps at night. It adds some extra weight and bulk to the pack when we are backpacking, but it fits nicely at the base of my bag and provides my dog with a cozy place to be throughout the trip.”

Ruffwear Front Range Dog Harness
Leashes, Harnesses & Control
The Ruffwear Front Range harness is my favorite piece of dog gear and would make a great gift for any dog owner. It’s versatile and attractive, fitting in at the brewery and on trips deep in the backcountry.
My favorite part about this harness is the durable front clip. At first, I was skeptical: it’s made of webbing and looked like something my strong, 62-pound Juniper could easily break. But after about three years of heavy usage, it’s yet to give.
Why it's great
For dogs who pull or are working on heeling, a front clip is a vital asset, and this is the best one I’ve encountered in a dog harness. While many harnesses are difficult to put on, this one is easy, with reflective trimming for late-night city or rural backcountry runs.
It also works with the winner in our Best Dog Hiking Packs guide.
It barely shows wear and is easily washable, so it keeps up with all of your canine’s adventures without looking dirty or dingy.
Whether this is a gift for a friend looking to start adventuring with their pup, or just a gift for yourself, you can’t go wrong with the Front Range Harness.

Orvis Personalized Reflective Collar
Everyday Wear & Identification
When I’m out in the wilderness with my dog, I always put this Orvis Personalized Reflective Collar around her neck. Its bright orange trim makes it easy to spot in the daytime, while its reflective material shines like a beacon at night. Plus, if you purchase from Orvis, personalization means you can print your phone number right on the collar in case your dog ever gets lost.
Quick specs:
Price: $43
Best for: Hikers, campers, runners
Key highlights: Huge band of reflective material, personalizable with up to 28 characters of text, easy to clip on and off
Why it’s a great gift:
Helps keep their dog (and them!) seen and safe
Personalizeable
Great gift to show you care for their dog’s safety
“I really like how much this collar can help keep my dog visible, both during the day and at night. I got it in the orange color which stands out against my black dog’s fur so she’s easy to spot in the daytime. At night, though, is where this collar literally and figuratively shines. Since my dog has black fur, she can be really hard to see once the sun goes down. The massive reflective band on this collar solved that problem, and I’ve found it to be much more noticeable than other reflective dog collars I’ve tried. ”
