We tested the Oboz Bridger Mid hiking boots on dirt, high-alpine scree, and in spring mud in Colorado—here’s how they performed.
An in-depth review of our favorite midweight hiking boots

Our Verdict
A good pair of hiking boots should fit like a sleeve but limit movement around the ankle to prevent trail injuries. At the same time, your feet should have room to breathe and splay, bending in the places that allow you to comfortably navigate trails. The Oboz Bridger Mid Waterproof hiking boots manage to fill these two demands at every turn.
While many hiking boots these days adopt a minimalistic design that favors a lighter, and a flexible construction, they often forfeit longevity. The Oboz Bridger Mid Waterproof hiking boots, however, offer the stability and confidence of a traditional hiking boot without feeling like a brick, supporting movement through uneven and slippery terrain.
Oboz Bridger Mid Waterproof

Women's
We wore these boots for 30 miles across Colorado’s foothills, urban landscapes, and 13,000-foot mountains to evaluate qualities like comfort, grip, durability, breathability, and weather resistance. Then we directly compared them to more than 10 other pairs of hiking boots.
One of the biggest drawbacks of these boots is that they’re more prone to contributing to foot fatigue—especially when wet—compared with other hiking boots. Yet their rigid upper materials and sturdy outsole, support, and heel cup make them one of our favorite boots for rugged trails where protection is vital for overall comfort.

How we tested
Navigating an Easy Hike in Colorado in the Oboz Bridger Mid Waterproof hiking boots.
We wore the Oboz Bridger Mid Waterproof hiking boots for about 30 miles on Colorado scree, muddy creeksides, across urban landscapes, and above 10,000 feet to monitor their performance. We tested during (seasons), with weather conditions that ranged from bluebird days to blizzards with temperatures ranging from 30 to 75 degrees. We also ran these boots under the kitchen faucet before entirely submerging them in the sink to test their waterproof components.
We also tested these alongside similar hiking boots for our Best Women’s Hiking Boots, Best Men’s Hiking Boots, Best Waterproof Hiking Boots, and Best Lightweight Hiking Boots guides to compare traction, durability, weight, comfort, and agility.
Performance in the field
Fit and sizing
The Oboz Bridger Mid Waterproof hiking boots range in men’s 7-15 and women’s 5-12, accommodating half sizes and feet with both regular and wide widths. Most hikers find that the Bridger Mid Waterproof hiking boots run true to size with a medium to high volume fit. In our experience, the length of these boots was just right. The toe box felt spacious, yet the sculpted heel helped lock our feet into position so we weren’t swimming in material.
Comfort and support
Given the aggressive design of the Oboz Bridger Mid Waterproof hiking boots, we were expecting a substantial break-in period when we slipped these onto our feet. But it only took a few miles of hiking in the Colorado foothills to realize they were trail ready.
While the materials are stiffer than boots like the La Sportiva Ultra Raptor 3 GTX Mid hiking boots, their design prevented them from rubbing and chafing throughout our first 5-mile hike.
The midsole of these boots was also noticeably supportive, cupping our heel and arch with each step. The O Fit insole added a touch of arch support, which is a perk for hikers with medium arches. And the ankle cuff, although heftier than some cuffs we’ve tested, maintained the ideal balance between stiff and comfortable. The Granite Peak rubber outsole of these boots also managed to maintain stability, even on rocky terrain and while carrying a pack.
Traction and grip
The Bridger Mid Waterproof hiking boots come with a Granite Peak outsole with an aggressive 4mm directional lug pattern that’s designed to provide added traction on loose and steep terrain—and boy did it ever deliver.
One afternoon, we climbed 1,500 feet over the course of 1.85 miles to reach the summit of a 13,000+-foot mountain. These boots maintained their grip on loose gravel and dirt on both the ascent and the descent, even while our fellow hikers slipped alongside us. Over the course of the day, we only grew more confident in these boots’ ability to keep us from slipping.
Waterproofing, drying time and breathability
Truly waterproof boots tend to limit breathability, which ended up being the case for the Bridger Mid boots. Yet they surpassed our expectations when it came to maintaining a waterproof barrier during intense saturation. At one point, we dunked these boots in a sink full of water and found that it took about two minutes for the external materials to absorb water but the waterproof membrane prevented the water from reaching the boot interior. After completely saturating everything, these boots took 8 hours to air dry.
Warmth and insulation
Designed as a 3-season boot, the Bridger Mid Waterproof boots aren’t exactly built for winter conditions. However, we found that when we paired them with warm wool socks they handled moderately cool conditions with ease, likely due to the leather construction of the boots.
Check out our Best Winter Hiking Boots guide if you’re looking for insulated hiking boots.
Durability and construction
The nubuck leather upper, rubber toe rand, nylon shank, and TPU chassis on these boots makes for a truly rugged, abrasion-resistant trail companion. Significantly more durable than most lightweight synthetic hikers, these boots are the kind of wingman that you want when you know you’re tough on your gear.
That said, some customer reviews expressed concerns about sole separation and waterproofing degradation over the course of the life of the boot. Oboz offers a 1-year limited warranty to cover manufacturing defects, which may cover issues like this. We have yet to see any signs of deterioration on either front and would expect these boots to last 500-700 miles when properly maintained.
Weight and packability
Given the durability of the Oboz Bridger Mid Waterproof hiking boots, we were shocked by the weight of them. The women’s version weighs 2 pounds and 0.4 ounces while the men’s weigh 2 pounds and 6 ounces. Compared to the Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX hiking boots, our favorite lightweight hiking boots for our Best Women’s Hiking Boots Guide and our favorite breathable boots in the Best Women’s Waterproof Hiking Boots Guide, the Oboz Bridger weighs just 4.8 ounces more.
However, one noticeable trait of the Oboz Bridger is that the upper has a tendency to absorb more moisture than some synthetic alternatives, which can lend itself to heavier boots while hiking and lengthier dry times. That said, it takes a substantial amount of rain to saturate both the exterior and the interior of these boots.
Features
Close Up of the Oboz Bridger Speedhooks
Lacing System
The Oboz Bridger Mid hiking boots use a traditional metal hook-and-eyelet lacing system, providing stability and ankle support with ease. The lower eyelets keep everything locked in place while the open speed hooks on the collar allow hikers to make quick adjustments on the go. During testing, the laces stayed secure while allowing for enough customization to maintain the right balance between support and comfort.
Chassis
The Bridger Mid’s TPU chassis gives you more underfoot stability on uneven terrain than other boots. That being said, it also maintains torsional rigidity - or support for quick turns. When paired with the dual-density EVA midsole, this creates a stable base that helps to minimize foot fatigue, even on technical and unstable terrain.
Toe Cap
A molded rubber toe cap wraps around the boot’s toe to provide added protection against obstacles like rocks, roots, and debris.
Colorways
These boots are available in several earthy, trail-inspired tones, including Walnut, Rio Red, and Hazy Gray.
Heel Cup
One of the features that most surprised us on the Bridger Mid was the sculpted heel cup, which is designed to keep the foot positioned for action in the boot while limiting unwanted movement. When paired with the O Fit insole, this feature helped to keep our feet from slipping on steep climbs and descents, minimizing issues like toe jamming.
Trail Tread HD Rubber
The Oboz Trail Tread HD Rubber is a heavy-duty rubber compound that’s designed for durability. The Oboz Bridger Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots incorporate this rubber into the outsole, which lends itself to not only long-lasting use but also maintaining grip on wet surfaces.O Fit insole
The O Fit insole features Oboz’s proprietary insole technology, which favors an anatomical design with a sculpted arch, heel cup, and cushioning pods to help to keep the foot in a neutral position.
Sustainability
The new B-Dry waterproof lining incorporates 100% recycled lining textiles and 25% post-industrial recycled content for added sustainability. Oboz has also been planting a tree for every pair of boots sold since 2007, contributing to significant offsets every year.
